Deans on the Move

New leadership at business schools worldwide.

The University of Chicago Booth School of Business has named a successor to its dean of the past nine years, Edward A. Snyder. The school’s new leader will be Sunil Kumar, currently the Fred H. Merrill Professor of Operations, Information and Technology at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Kumar also serves as the Stanford business school’s senior associate dean for academic affairs, where he oversees the MBA program and leads faculty groups in marketing and organizational behavior. Kumar starts a five-year term as dean of Chicago Booth in January. Until then, Harry L. Davis, a long-time faculty member at Booth, will serve as interim dean.

The Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has started a search for a new dean. Current dean Michael M. Knetter has accepted a position as president and chief executive officer of the UW Foundation, effective in October. Dean since 2002, Knetter is credited with having orchestrated the Wisconsin Naming Gift, a partnership of alumni who gave US$85 million to preserve the Wisconsin name for at least 20 years. His other accomplishments include the expansion of the school’s headquarters and improvements in its MBA programs. During the search, the school’s vice dean, Joan Schmit, will serve as interim dean.

Kenneth W. Freeman has been named as the dean of the School of Management at Boston University. Freeman, who joins BU from the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., is well known as a business turnaround expert, having shepherded Quest Diagnostics from an underperforming business to be the world’s leading medical testing company. A recent study by professors at INSEAD ranked Freeman as the 67th best performing CEO in the world.

Lydia McKinley-Floyd is the dean of the School of Business at Clark Atlanta University. Her prior experience includes stints as dean of the School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University and of the College of Business Administration at Chicago State University. McKinley-Floyd also served as associate dean in the College of Business Administration at Savannah State University and as chair of CAU’s marketing department.
